A Perfectly Normal Family (no UK cert) - BFS At Home choice for July 2021

Directed by Malou Reymann | Drama | Danish with subtitles | 97 mins | Denmark | 2020

When Emma’s father says he wants to live the rest of his life as a woman, Emma is thrown completely off kilter. Thomas makes a rapid transition into Agnete: a woman in stylish dresses who suddenly has no more interest in football. Who is this new father? Can Emma even call Agnete that?

This heart-wrenchingly honest portrait of a household in crisis takes an intimate look at the modern family dynamic and how challenges to the established order affect its most vulnerable members. The viewer is immediately aligned with younger daughter Emma, rather than her older (less sensitive) sister, and we see her struggle with the loss of the order she's always known in her family.

Ultimately hopeful, the film successfully deals with the trauma of a crisis of identity, how to remain true to oneself without alienating others, and with the strength of family ties.

Reymann is hyper-alert to Emma’s pain but also beautifully observes Agnete’s radiance GUARDIAN

A film which acknowledges that children can love a parent and respect their decision, while still suffering from the fallout of that choice SCREEN DAILY
