1977 Brazil under a military dictatorship: Marcelo, an enigmatic man driving a yellow Volkswagen Beetle, arrives in Recife via an out of town petrol station. We don’t know why he’s come to Recife and it’ll be a while before we piece together how Marcelo has ended up on the wrong side of those in power. However, the opening scene plunges us straight into the world of corruption and violence from which Marcelo is trying to escape.
Such confident skill, combined with the richness of the narrative and the impressively fluid storytelling, renders the film riveting for all 158 minutes of its running time. One is tempted to call it a masterpiece – Sight and Sound
