About the Event
Directed by Luis Buñuel | Satirical drama | 97 mins | France/Italy/Spain | 1972 | French, Spanish and Latin with English subtitles
Fernando Rey, Stéphane Audran, Delphine Seyrig
Six very middle class people gather for dinner at a stately woodland house. All ordinary and banal, except, repeatedly, the meal never happens. Something always interferes - funerals, terrorism, sexual escapades and bad manners. Buñuel drags his characters through an escalating series of crises and surrealist set pieces, tethered loosely to reality and designed solely to prevent them politely sitting down to eat. Things it turns out are neither discreet nor charming!
Outrageous, searing and at times blasphemous, Bunuel’s brilliantly bizarre satire remains as gleefully anarchic as ever - BFI
