About the Event

Directed by Hirokazu Kora-eda | Drama | Korean with subtitles | 129 mins | S Korea | 2022

Sang-hyun, the owner of a launderette in Busan, is being leaned on by local gangsters, so he resorts to selling babies. A local church has a “baby box” where new mothers can leave unwanted infants. Sang-hyun’s big-hearted right-hand man works part-time at the church, so if a baby arrives while he is on duty, he spirits it away. Things get complicated when one baby drop-off is observed by two police detectives on a stake out and more complicated still when the mother in question has a change of heart, returns to the church, and cottons on to the men’s racket.

A group of misfits find a family in Hirokazu Kora-eda’s unexpectedly heartwarming road movie about baby sellers WASHINGTON POST
